Day one of ‘San Antonio Four’ hearing

Thursday, April 23rd, 2015

The “San Antonio Four” appeared in court Wednesday for the first time since they were convicted and sentenced for sexual assault in the late 90’s.

These four women — were sent to prison for more than a decade, after being accused of raping and threatening two young girls with a gun.

The four were let out about three years ago on bond, based on new evidence…now the defense says they have even more new evidence.

Case of “San Antonio Four” Set to Enter its Final Act

Thursday, March 19th, 2015

photo: Tamir Kalifa

“On April 22, the case will enter its final act as the two alleged victims take the stand. Now in their late 20s, one still maintains the abuse took place, and the other says the two were coerced to make a false accusation. After each is cross-examined, a judge will decide the likely truth — essentially who is more credible — and make a recommendation to the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals. The state’s highest criminal court will then decide whether the women should be declared innocent and entitled to compensation from the state, or, in an unlikely but plausible scenario, sent back to prison.”

The new panic: campus sex assaults

Sunday, February 22nd, 2015

EMILY COOPER FOR THE BOSTON GLOBE

“The situation on college campuses has become so dire that civil libertarians are calling for sexual assault investigations to be left to police and prosecutors. Despite the fact that conviction in a criminal court carries severe sentences and other harsh ramifications, frustrated and fearful students, parents, and lawyers seem prepared to risk criminal convictions in their search for investigatory and prosecutorial fairness.

“If the past is prologue, it is almost certain that the current campus sexual assault madness will burn itself out, leaving in its wake the wreckage of many young lives. My concern is how long it will be before sanity and decency return.”

Please Send Bob Halsey a Birthday Card

Thursday, February 12th, 2015

Bob Halsey turns 86 on February 18th. I am surprised he is still alive. He has been in bad health for years.

Bob is an innocent man who has been in prison since September of 1993. He will die in prison. And even if by some miracle he were to be released, he has nowhere to go and no one to take him in.

Bob was railroaded by many of the same characters who sent Bernard Baran to prison. Baran’s prosecutor, Dan Ford, was the trial judge. Jane Satullo was the chief interrogator of the children.

You can learn more about his case.

Jesse Friedman Deserves the Chance to prove His Innocence

Monday, February 9th, 2015

Todd Heisler/The New York Times

“From the beginning, the case was deeply flawed. The only evidence that Jesse and his father, Arnold, had abused anyone consisted of statements to the police by children and one of Jesse’s friends. Many of the statements were made after repeated or hourslong visits from detectives who would not leave until they heard what they wanted. None of the children had previously complained to anyone of any abuse.

Three people spent years in prison over a horrible crime against children – that never happened

Sunday, February 8th, 2015

This is a “ritual abuse” case in Buffalo that never received any national publicity. There may be many more cases like this one. Even experts in the history of ritual abuse have no idea how many innocent people were accused, and how many still might be imprisoned. Read the full story in The Buffalo News.

Baker can provide state ‘apology’ for Amirault

Friday, January 23rd, 2015

From Barbara Anderson:

“Charlie Baker’s father asked me several years ago if he could help; after we had lunch together, Charlie Sr. tried to find Gerald a job that wouldn’t require him to be near a school. Charlie Jr. met Gerald and one of his daughters on the campaign trail and assured them this will be one of the first things on his agenda. His opponent, Martha Coakley, was one of Gerald’s ambitious prosecutors, and I suspect many voters who know this story voted against her because of it.”

Lawrence Brose Case Finally Over

Thursday, December 18th, 2014

“Lawrence Brose’s five-year battle with the United States was always about more than child pornography.

“For his fellow artists, many of them skeptical of the government’s allegations, Brose’s criminal prosecution was also about freedom of speech and expression.”
